Instructions for Perfect Easy Meat Sauce Spaghetti

  • Season ground beef with salt and pepper. I've found this is the best way to season the meat thoroughly, ensuring every bite is packed with flavor.
  • In a large skillet, add the beef and chopped onion and brown. Drain excess grease. I cannot overstate the importance of browning. It's where we build that deep, savory foundation for the entire sauce through the Maillard reaction. I always drain the excess grease. Nobody wants a greasy sauce.
  • Add tomato sauce, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, parsley, garlic powder, crushed red pepper, worcestershire, and sugar to the skillet. These ingredients create the complex base flavor profile of our sauce. I experimented a lot with ratios. I've found this combination to be the perfect balance of savory, sweet, and spicy.
  • Stir well to combine and bring to a boil. Add water and stir well. Combining the ingredients ensures that the flavors are evenly distributed throughout the sauce. Adding water thins the sauce to the perfect consistency. I like my sauce to coat the spaghetti nicely without being too thick.
  • Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Add chopped basil before serving, if desired. Simmering is the key to melding all the flavors together and deepening their intensity. The longer it simmers, the richer the sauce becomes. I always add fresh basil right before serving to add a bright, fresh element that complements the richness of the sauce. It's a trick I picked up from a chef friend, and it's a game-changer.
  • This sauce tastes great in Spaghetti Pie, Million Dollar Spaghetti, Slow Cooker Lasagna and Instant Pot Spaghetti.
